R.3 Racer

Try it on Itch

What’s This?

R.3 Racer is a Unity time trial racing game developed by Skyfin Studios. I was the lead game designer for the team in my game production II class. You play as an R.C. car in a child’s bedroom that can transform into 3 different vehicles: car, icemobile, and drone. The car is best suited for driving on pavement, icemobile is good on ice but turning is slippery, and drone allows you to lift off and glide for a limited time. I designed 2 of the games tracks: Training Trek and Slinky Circuit.

My Process

Skills Applied

  • Preproduction
    • voted on a 2D game to expand upon from a previous class
    • collaborated and assembled GDD
    • narrowed down vision and scope
  • Vertical slice milestone
    • resolved disagreement with how vehicle should control
      • designer suggested transformations should be automatic, I thought they should be manual
      • asked for producer’s opinion after circling, agreed they should be manual
      • reasoning is it adds more depth to the gameplay than just driving and turning
    • designed tutorial track showcasing vehicle mechanics
    • collaborated with designers to assemble tutorial in Unity
  • Alpha milestone
    • compromised replacing boat mechanic with icemobile
    • tasked designers with sketching out 1 unique course each
    • changed title to R3 Racer (RC Racer was copyrighted)
  • Beta milestone
    • implemented feedback from playtesting
    • tasked designers with building their sketched courses in Unity
    • assisted decorating 2 tracks with imported art assets
  • Gold master
    • added letter-block road signs in courses and other visual polishes (added a slinky tunnel to my track)
    • tasked designers with updating their courses based on playtest feedback (some did not)
    • composed 2 music tracks for tutorial and my course
  • Unity splines
  • Co-leading a small team of varying disciplines
  • Resolving disagreements + compromising
  • Adapting vision based on player feedback
  • Level design
