Tic Tac Two: The Sequel Tic Tac Toe Needed

What’s This?
Tic Tac Two was my first game design project I worked on with a team of 5. The game acts as a sequel to tic tac toe, with a 4×4 grid and power-ups the player can use to gain an edge. These power-ups can vary from shifting an entire row, adding a wall to block off a potential win, and swapping two adjacent letters.

My Process
Skills Applied
- Listed goals
- constrained to reinventing tic-tac-toe
- ideated mechanics like shifting rows
- Listed all mechanic ideas
- struggled to narrow down ideas into something cohesive
- decided each idea could be a single-use power up
- Created rules
- playtested and iterated rules
- balanced power ups
- Finalized polish
- Came up with a road-trip theme: tic tac go
- naming convention for power ups was confusing to follow
- theming was scrapped for the neutral tic tac two
- Came up with a road-trip theme: tic tac go
- Iterated on the rules again
- Solo this time, years after finishing the project
- Repurposed power ups for balancing (voids and walls)
- voids didn’t benefit the player, and walls were the only defensive item
- voids were repurposed to be dibs spaces, and walls now have an offensive ability
- Working with a small team
- Tabletop game design
- Balancing (nerfs and buffs)
- Playtesting + getting actionable feedback
- Problem solving
