Tic Tac Two: The Sequel Tic Tac Toe Needed

What’s This?

Tic Tac Two was my first game design project I worked on with a team of 5. The game acts as a sequel to tic tac toe, with a 4×4 grid and power-ups the player can use to gain an edge. These power-ups can vary from shifting an entire row, adding a wall to block off a potential win, and swapping two adjacent letters.

My Process

Skills Applied

  • Listed goals
    • constrained to reinventing tic-tac-toe
    • ideated mechanics like shifting rows
  • Listed all mechanic ideas
    • struggled to narrow down ideas into something cohesive
    • decided each idea could be a single-use power up
  • Created rules
    • playtested and iterated rules
    • balanced power ups
  • Finalized polish
    • Came up with a road-trip theme: tic tac go
      • naming convention for power ups was confusing to follow
      • theming was scrapped for the neutral tic tac two
  • Iterated on the rules again
    • Solo this time, years after finishing the project
    • Repurposed power ups for balancing (voids and walls)
      • voids didn’t benefit the player, and walls were the only defensive item
      • voids were repurposed to be dibs spaces, and walls now have an offensive ability
  • Working with a small team
  • Tabletop game design
  • Balancing (nerfs and buffs)
  • Playtesting + getting actionable feedback
  • Problem solving
